EducationI graduated Summa Cum Laude from UCLA where I simultaneously earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Mathematics. I maintained a 4.0 GPA and received the Sherwood Scholarship, an award honoring one student out of the entire graduating class with the highest achievement in Mathematics.
ExperienceWhile at UCLA I was not only a student, but had the opportunity to teach for several years as well. I worked as an instructor in the Computer/Math lab where I helped students understand and solve mathematical problems. Because of my excellent ability to teach and my impressive understanding of high level math, I was selected to develop and teach a course to motivate and challenge college freshmen who demonstrated great academic promise in Mathematics.
I also have a strong ability to teach test taking strategies. I acquired these skills during my 8 years working as a professional actuary, a job that requires a strong math background. As an actuary, I had to meet rigorous professional educational standards by passing a series of exams. It was during this time that I learned the art of test-taking and despite the test’s 80% failure rate, I successfully passed 5 exams.
I am now the mother of two wonderful kids and am once again pursuing my passion of teaching math. Mathematics is a fascinating subject of study, but without proper instruction it can be frustrating for students. I can help you succeed in math by:
Encouraging a positive attitude toward learning
Improving basic skills, study habits and test taking strategies
Increasing confidence and mathematical ability
Teaching formulas and problem solving techniques
I specialize in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, pre-calculus, calculus, and SAT. I am looking forward to helping you excel in Mathematics!
IMPORTANT: my schedule is currently full but I might be able to add another student if you live in Quail Hill, Irvine. So please let me know where you live when you contact me. Thank you!
HobbiesSpend time with my kids. I also love mountain biking, hiking, and skiing.

Maruska is a wonderful tutor who is very dedicated to helping her students learn and improve their math skills. She has a through understanding of the material she teaches and is always prepared to answer any questions. Maruska has helped my daughter approach difficult problems and see concepts in more comprehensive ways. We are very grateful for her help!
We have now asked Maruska twice to tutor for PreCalc and not only does she know the subject matter very well, but has a very effective teaching style. Every minute is worth it.
Maruska started tutoring my son (who was a junior in HS) in Algebra II in 10/2010. She turned him from an Algebra/Math-phobic into someone with confidence in solving math problems. He got an A in the course. The thing that my son is most appreciating about Maruska is that she has a “game plan”. She set a goal with my son and me and worked towards that goal systemically. She is patient and very realistic. She figures out the weak areas and focuses on them. Because of the impressive results, we have engaged her to tutor my son in SAT Math as well as pre-Calculus in the upcoming school year. We have tried 5 different tutors (in different subjects); Maruska is by far the best. Other than helping my son understand math, serendipitously, she also acts as a mentor for his personal development. My son is a lot more mature and takes responsibilities much more seriously as a result of his association with Maruska.
