Private tutor in Irvine, CA

Education

B.S. from UCLA in Atmospheric, Oceanic and Environmental Sciences, with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society. I specialized in meteorology and operational weather forecasting. I also have experience with paleoclimate, environmental urban planning, LID (low impact development) for stormwater management, and climate change communications. M.S. from University of California Irvine (UCI) in Civil Engineering. My focus is in water resources and hydrology, with experience in statistical data analysis, climate data analysis, and non-linear diffusion and advective modeling. I am currently a PhD Student at UCI in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. My research interests lie in the effects of projected climate change on local and regional water resources management, particularly for drought-prone, semi-arid regions like California.

Experience

I have done private one-on-one tutoring sessions for university students at UCLA and UCI. The subjects were in meteorology, earth sciences, and climate sciences. I also have experience with classroom teaching at Gateway Academy (SAT test prep institution) during a summer program for SAT prep. I worked with small groups of 3-12 students and also provided feedback individually on essays. I would like to impart knowledge to younger students who may not be as exposed to the environmental/earth sciences as they are with physics, biology and chemistry. Other leadership credentials: I completed UCI's Mentoring Excellence Program in 2014. This program equipped me with the skills to carry on a professional, yet friendly and mutually beneficial mentoring relationship. It also taught me about the nuances of the student-teacher relationship and how teaching can be improved with student feedback. I am also president of Climatepedia, an educational group on-campus for climate change awareness. Although I do research in science and engineering, I have many interests in the humanities. I enjoy art history, literature, linguistics, grammar, and learning new languages. I believe strong skills in both the sciences and the arts are important. Understanding the fundamentals of both are necessary for a strong academic profile. Hobbies

I am very organized and respond promptly to email or phone contact. I believe being organized has a key role in effective studying and learning. I also advocate proper time management and planning on a schedule, which prevents the "cramming" and "all-nighters" that many students are a victim of due to lack of foresight. I also think that school should not be seen as a race to the top grade or top ranking. There should be a balance between intense studying and relaxing with non-academic hobbies. After all, the brain is like a muscle and needs to rest to perform at its best! I have played piano for many years and enjoy writing and cooking.
