Experience

One reason I want to be a tutor is because I enjoy helping others. Unlike school teaching's standards/objectives of a curriculum and passing the class, with tutoring the focus is on the individual's needs, so addressing the individual's unique perspective and learning style are more preferable to me. I also don't have much experience teaching entire classes (other than a small group I've tutored for), so I think tutoring would be a good place for me to start my career path in teaching. I have a fair amount of experience with tutoring itself. Most of my experience comes from tutoring grammar courses at UC Santa Cruz for two quarters, working with anywhere from 2-8 students at a time. Being that I excelled in my own grammar courses, I believe grammar to be one of my strongest areas in my language skills. I also have additional experience with one client from UniversityTutor.com (their review is here on my page), whom I have mostly assisted with in writing but as well as with sentence structure/grammar and word choice. Since I have acquired my TESL (Teaching English As A Second Language) Certificate, I have become more familiarized with a formal method for teaching English to both native and non-native speakers, and have a wealth of materials to draw from. A few areas that I specialize in include grammar, writing, speaking/conversation, pronunciation, listening, and vocabulary. My knowledge of language is far-encompassing, but also as much informal as it is formal. A few relevant language classes I've taken include the following: •Phonology I and II (sound structure of language and relevant patterns) •Semantics I and II (structure of meaning in both words and sentences) •Syntax I and II (structure of grammar/sentence structure) •Spanish 1-5 •Creative Writing

Hobbies

My main academic interests have always been the humanities, such as language, psychology (especially social psych), anthropology and philosophy. I have always found language to be fascinating and complex, especially in the context of other languages, which has driven me to study it in great detail. Some more specific areas of language I enjoy reading about include metaphor/figurative language, etymology or the study of word roots/origins (which is great for learning vocabulary), and the study of natural categories in language and the human mind. Other favorite hobbies of mine include listening to music, reading, playing videogames, painting with watercolor, and anything related to Japanese culture or other culture for that matter.
