Experience
My goal as a tutor is to help the student so that he does not need a tutor forever. You can't depend on your tutor for the rest of your life. My approach is that I teach the student on how he can think by himself. I want him to be a critical thinker. I want him to find solutions to problems not mentioned in the textbooks so that he can perform well in a real job so that he does not get fired. Grades and test scores are important in terms of getting accepted to college, and unfortunately, most companies do evaluate their job applicants in terms of their grades, recommendations, and where they graduate. Even if the student gets accepted to Berkeley, UCLA or Stanford, he needs to be a critical thinker by solving some difficult real-life problems, not taught from their textbooks or coursework in the university. In the past, I have helped two former students get accepted to Stanford University in the undergraduate level. They were so competent after they had my help. I basically told them that they did not need a tutor after one student raised their grades from a C to A in their high school work while the other student raised his grade from a B to A. They managed to learn how not to get my help after I have helped them for 3 months.
