Education

University of California, Irvine - BS, Sociology Double Minor in Education and Management Class of 2015 I always had a passion in teaching and working with kids, therefore I am interested in tutoring on the side after work or on the weekend. Normally during the weekdays Monday- Friday I work from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM and I am very flexible on the weekend.

Experience

I was born and raised in a low income neighborhood in LA. I understand the struggle of students not having the extra help, because I have been through that when I was younger. My parents did not speak English so they were unable to help me with my homework. This motivated me to work harder and paid attention in class because I wanted to grasp on to everything I learned and hate struggling. Even though I tried very hard to do that, there was always something I cannot fully learn. I would stay after school on certain days just to ask my teacher for more help. To this day, I still consider myself a hard worker who constantly push myself to be better and learn every day. This is why I want to become a tutor, to help others. My approach in tutoring is to understand students personally and academically. I want to be able to help students achieve their academic goal and get them ahead in class. As an education minor, I took a variety of education classes at UCI from learning about children behavior to making an agenda for class, I learned a lot about how students behave at different ages and how to interact with each and every one. Not all students are the same, therefore, as a tutor I have to adjust my agenda according to what the student need to improve on and what they are strong at. In tutoring sessions, I plan to let my students solve problems on their own to see if they grasp the basic idea of things they learn in school. When students do struggle with a problem, I show them different ways of breaking down a problem and what they can do to solve it. After they are done, I would normally create a new question that is similar to the one they were struggling to see if the student understood what we went over. When I was in high school, I picked up a tutoring job at my community nonprofit club. I help tutor low income students who needed extra help in school. Majority of the students’ parents were never home or has a language barrier. I tutored grade 1 to middle school level. From my previous experience in tutoring, I learn that all students learn different. Some learn things visually and others learn as they attempt their problems. When my students don't understand a problem, I would always have them attempt their problem first rather than giving them the answer. This way, student don't always rely on someone and gain problem solving skills. Other skills I have is that I am very proficient in Mandarin and Cantonese. I enjoy the sense of accomplishment and watching my students succeed in school. It proves to me that I can make a difference in someone's life.
